Terry is a thirteen year old orphan, having lost both his parents and grandmother in two separate fires as he was growing up.
But he discovers that these tragedies may be more than a coincidence when he too is caught in a blazing inferno - and finds himself magically transported into an amazing world in which characters from old nursery rhymes have come to bizarre, breathtaking and often frightening life.
Learning that he is regarded as a Rhymer, Terry also
discovers that the legends of Rhyme World have foretold that he must rescue the world's most sacred object - the Hawthorn Tree - from corruption by a malevolent being called the Duke of Despair.
In order to do this he must battle his way through a series of riddles, horrors and challenges, discovering more about his true identity as he does so, before eventually facing up to the terrifying Duke of Despair himself.
